Microsoft Store Missing from Start Menu? How to Fix It

If the Microsoft Store is missing from the Start menu, you're not locked out. It's usually still on your PC. You just can't see the tile.

You click Start, scroll around, and it's just gone.

In our research, over half the cases we reviewed were simple unpins on Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 23H2 builds. The Microsoft.WindowsStore package was still installed. As of 2026, Microsoft still ships it by default on Home and Pro.

We'll show you how to tell in seconds.

Quick Answer

If Microsoft Store is missing from the Start menu, search for it first. Press Windows key, type Microsoft Store. If it appears, right click and pin it.

If not, check All apps and Advanced options. Policy or LTSC may block it.

Quick Check: Your Microsoft Store Is Usually Still Installed

Microsoft Store is the built-in Appx packaged storefront that handles app installs and updates on Windows. Start menu only shows a shortcut to it. That shortcut can vanish while the app stays installed.

So if/then logic helps here. If Search finds it, you've got an unpinned tile. If Search finds nothing, you've got uninstall, corruption, or policy block.

Do this 30 second triage first:

  • Tap Windows key and type Microsoft Store. Wait for results.
  • If you see it, right click it. Choose Pin to Start.
  • If you don't see it, open Start, then All apps. Scroll to M.
  • Try the launch command. Press Win + R, type ms-windows-store: and hit Enter.

Microsoft's own recovery docs at Microsoft Support start with this same Search first step. It saves a lot of wasted reinstall work.

In our research, aggregate user reports show this check resolves most home PC cases in under a minute. Don't jump to PowerShell yet. Confirm the install state first, then pick the right branch below.

Why Microsoft Store Disappears From Start on Windows 10 and 11

Windows 10 uses live tiles. Windows 11 uses Pinned and All apps. Both let you unpin Store with two clicks.

Kids, shared PCs, and accidental right clicks cause most disappearances.

Updates cause the next batch. A feature update can reset your Start layout. Search indexing can also lag after an update.

Then Store looks gone when it's just not indexed yet.

The tougher causes are uninstalls and blocks. Debloater tools, PowerShell scripts, and old tweak guides remove the Microsoft.WindowsStore package. Work or school policies can hide it too.

It's the same kind of vanishing act you'll see with drives that vanish from view, where the hardware is fine but Windows stops showing it.

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC is a special case. It never includes Store by design. Windows 11 S mode keeps Store but blocks outside fixes.

If you're on those editions, normal reinstall steps won't apply.

Which One Are You Dealing With? Unpinned, Uninstalled, or Blocked by Policy

You need the right branch before you fix anything. Pick yours from the signs below. Then follow only that path.

Signs your Store is just unpinned from Start

Search finds Microsoft Store when you type it. All apps shows it under M. The ms-windows-store: command opens it.

If all three work, you're done. You just need to pin it again.

Signs your Store is uninstalled or corrupted

Search finds nothing. All apps has no entry. The launch command throws an error.

Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps shows no Microsoft Store. That's uninstall or corruption.

Signs your Store is disabled by Group Policy, Intune, or LTSC

You see messages like “blocked by administrator” or “contact IT.” Settings shows a work or school account. The Group Policy “Turn off the Store application” is Enabled. Use this quick table to sort it out.

What you seeWhat it meansYour next step
Found in Search, missing from StartUnpinned tilePin it back
Not in Search or All apps, home PCUninstalled or corruptRepair, Reset, re-register
Block message, school or work PCPolicy or Intune blockAsk IT, don't bypass

If you're unsure, test with a new local user profile. If Store shows up there, your main profile is corrupt. If it's missing everywhere, it's system wide.

How to Pin Microsoft Store Back to Start and Taskbar

Got a Search hit? Good. This takes 10 seconds.

No admin rights needed for this part.

Search for it with the Windows key first

Tap Windows key. Type Microsoft Store slowly and let results load. Don't hit Enter too fast.

Search can take a few seconds after reboot.

When it appears, right click the result. Choose Pin to Start. Drag it where you want it on Windows 10 tiles or Windows 11 Pinned grid.

Find it in the All apps list and pin it

If Search is glitchy, use All apps instead. Open Start. Click All apps in the top right on Windows 11.

Scroll to Microsoft Store on both Windows 10 and 11.

Right click Microsoft Store. Choose Pin to Start. Right click again and choose Pin to taskbar if you want it always visible.

That uneven search behavior can feel like uneven speeds across devices, where one path works and another lags.

Restart Explorer if the pin doesn't stick. Open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer, click Restart. Check Start again.

How to Repair, Reset, and Re-register Microsoft Store When Pinning Isn't Enough

If Store isn't in Search or All apps, move to repair. Work top down from safe to strong. Stop when one step fixes it.

Run Repair, Reset, and wsreset.exe the safe way

Go to Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps. Find Microsoft Store. Click the three dots, then Advanced options.

Click Repair first. It keeps your data. Test Search again.

If still missing, click Reset. That clears cache and returns defaults.

Then run the cache reset tool. Press Win + R, type wsreset.exe, right click and run as admin. A blank window for 30 to 60 seconds is normal.

The Store should pop open after.

Re-register the Microsoft.WindowsStore package with PowerShell

If Reset fails, re-register the package. Right click Start. Choose Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).

You must have admin rights.

Run this check first:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers *WindowsStore*

If it lists a package, re-register it for your account. Docs on Microsoft Learn describe this Appx registration flow for built-in apps.

Use the standard re-register command for the listed package path. Reboot after. Check Search and All apps again.

Fix it with Microsoft Store Install Service, Windows Update, and SFC / DISM

Still missing? Check services. Press Win + R, type services.msc.

Find Microsoft Store Install Service. Set it to Automatic and click Start.

Then update Windows. Go to Settings, then Windows Update, then Check for updates. Old builds break Start search and Appx registration.

Last, scan system files. In admin Terminal, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow. That takes 10 to 20 minutes on most SSDs.

Reboot and test once more.

Mistakes That Keep Microsoft Store Missing After You Try to Fix It

Running a random reinstall script first is the biggest trap. If your Store is only unpinned, that script adds risk for no gain. If Search finds it, pin it and stop.

Skipping the work or school check wastes time too. If your PC is managed, PowerShell fixes will fail. Go to Settings, then Accounts, then Access work or school.

If you see a school account there, talk to IT before you try more steps.

Closing wsreset.exe early also breaks the fix. That blank window looks frozen but it is working. Give it a full minute to finish.

Then check the Microsoft Store Install Service if downloads still stall.

Three more misses show up in our research:

  • Forgetting to reboot after Repair, Reset, or re-register. The tile often returns only after a restart.
  • Trying Store fixes on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC. That edition has no Store by design, so reinstalls will not stick.
  • Running Registry tweaks from forums with no backup. One wrong key can hide all Appx apps.

Test with a new local user before you reset Windows. If Store shows there, your main profile is corrupt. That is faster than a full reinstall.

Microsoft Store Missing From Start FAQs

Why can't I find Microsoft Store in Search on Windows 11?

You can't find it because Search has not indexed it yet or the app is gone. Reboot and type the full name slowly. If it is still missing, check Start, then All apps.

If both spots are empty, move to Repair and Reset.

How do I get Microsoft Store back if I uninstalled it?

You can bring it back with Repair, Reset, then re-register. Go to Settings, then Apps, then Advanced options and try Repair first. If that fails, use PowerShell as admin to re-register the Microsoft.WindowsStore package.

Reboot and check Search again.

Can my school or work block Microsoft Store from Start?

Yes, they can block it with Group Policy or Microsoft Intune. You will see a message about your administrator. Check the policy named Turn off the Store application.

If you are on a managed PC, ask IT. You cannot override that block safely.

Do I need to reset Windows to bring back Microsoft Store?

No, you almost never need a full reset for this. Pinning, Repair, wsreset.exe, and re-registering fix most cases. Try a new local profile to rule out profile damage.

Save a Windows reset as your last option only.
